I have known Ms. Gardner for over five years. We originally met as co-workers at The Above/Beyond Family Treatment Center in Chicago. I am the resident Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy expert that trains staff members and leads REBT group therapy sessions. LeNita was stellar at developing her REBT clinical skills at the numerous REBT professional training seminars conducted by the Chicago Institute for REBT for Above/Beyond staff members. Without a doubt in my mind, she is one of the compassionate, caring, thoughtful individuals towards all clients/staff members that I have experienced in my 50 year career. Therefore, whoever she would provide any therapeutic services to will receive a great and positive influence because of her personality and therapeutic skills.

Our work includes community engagement, benefits and resource navigation, recovery support, institutional-to-community transitions, community reintegration, and post-transition follow-up. Founded by LeNita W. Gardner, CRSS, CHW, Next Steps Outreach draws on lived experience and more than four years of direct experience within the Colbert Consent Decree transition system. That experience informs our approach to advocacy, coordination, and community stabilization.
Our approach begins with each person’s goals, choices, strengths, and immediate needs. Through Community Health Worker (CHW) and Certified Recovery Support Specialist (CRSS) services, we build trust, identify practical barriers, and help individuals connect with benefits, services, and community resources.

Grounded in lived experience and recovery-oriented principles, we provide non-clinical support that encourages participation, independence, and progress toward personal goals. Needs outside our scope are referred to the appropriate provider or care team.

The Gardner Recovery Engagement Model (GREM) combines principles drawn from Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) with faith in a higher power. Through reflection, practical tools, and supportive conversations, GREM encourages individuals to examine unhelpful beliefs, recognize their strengths, and take meaningful steps toward personal growth.
Our support respects each person’s beliefs and readiness for change. We help individuals build confidence, set goals, and strengthen connections with community resources. REBT-informed tools are used for education and reflection within our non-clinical scope.
